Ken Slone's teaching experiences have been related in a series of stories. The reader can readily identify with the opportunities, the challenges, and the opportunities, the challenges, and the opportunities that present themselves to the mountain people.  One experiences sadness when reading about the numerous educational barriers that continue to exist in areas characterized by poverty and unemployment. However, as you read Mountain Teacher, you will smile, occasionally you will laugh out loud, and all in all you will be proud there are mountain teachers who believe that all students can learn and benefit from a well-rounded education.

Mountain Teacher illustrates that Ken Slone and his contemporaries are following in the footsteps of Jesse Stuart and Cratis Williams and carrying on the spirit of Eastern Kentucky's one-room school teachers.

The story telling tradition is alive and well in Eastern Kentucky's Big Sandy Valley.  Ken Slone grew up here and learned to listen to the stories that surrounded him.  Mountain Teacher is the product of thirty years of teaching students, listening to their stories, and building a community in the classroom.
